As a therapist, I often hear clients say they wish they’d started therapy sooner. “If only I’d sought help earlier, my life would be different,” they say. Regret often comes from letting fear, not knowing, or worrying about what others think delay getting the support they need.
The fear of the unknown often applies more to men. The perception of therapy is still so skewed. Many men think it’s something only women do. Interestingly, a significant number of these ‘macho’ men who come to me often do so under pressure from their partners. But believe me, all of them have realised that therapy is OK. As they’ve said, there’s nothing to be afraid of; it’s like having someone on your side who can listen, accept you the way you are, and, when needed, challenge your perceptions, understanding, and beliefs. Most importantly, they want the best for you.
Let’s change the idea that seeking therapy is weak. It’s a sign of strength and commitment to be THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF.
